Good Tidings For Milk Lovers
What’s the best go-to drink when you’re parched?
Most would probably assume water. It is natural. It lacks sugar, sodium, or fat, ingredients generally associated with unhealthy drinks.
But water doesn’t finish the job when it comes to rehydration. Often, people overdrink water, resulting in feeling bloated. Worse, our body flushes it faster than any other beverage. Regardless of water’s necessity, it just doesn’t keep us hydrated for as long as we would like.
Many turn to calorie-laden sports drinks to avoid overdrinking, provide flavor, and remain hydrated longer.
Studies, however, show skim milk makes for a better hydration drink than any sports drinks and even water.
Scientists at St. Andrews University in Scotland identify milk as the better thirst-quencher precisely because of the sugar, fat, and protein it contains. These components remain in the stomach longer and don’t require constant replenishment.
This matched results that researchers at McMaster University in Canada found with children, ages eight to ten. That study too found that milk kept the subjects hydrated longer because milk is “a source of high-quality protein, carbohydrates, calcium, and electrolytes.”
