One of the reasons people grow to hate America is because of the myth that it’s built on individualism. No country is built on individualism. Pursuing that version of America is to pursue nothing more than financial profit, consumerism, and ultimately, burnout.
I’ve met Americans who grew up in Budapest and hated it. They spent their time around immigrants and other Americans and never really felt Hungarian….but they didn’t really feel American either. To be part of an ethnicity is to identify with it, find common ground in common culture, and relate to the people as if they are family.
