To an extent, I agree that being a citizen of our country should come with perks like a UBI. But citizenship is like extended family. UBI in this sense is like a large inheritence that every extended family member gets for being related to the deceased heir. Immigration is like adoption. At what point do you put a stop on adoption to keep the inheritence pie from being split too many ways? Yang’s proposal is sound. If Americans are one big family, we naturally want to take care of each other. But people aren’t as interested in taking care of their neighbors, much less complete strangers, as they are their own family. I haven’t heard Yang talk about immigration restriction. To me, that’s a prerequisite before we even begin to discuss UBI.
