Seriously? Why flags?
I understand yard signs and bumper stickers, but a flag?
In bays and rivers, boats fly Trump flags, people with pickup trucks fly them from their beds, and in some areas of the country, they compete with the number of American flags.
I don’t recall the Bush, Gore, Kerry, McCain, Obama, or Romney campaigns using flags. Maybe they did, and I just wasn’t paying attention. But if they did, it wasn’t to this extent.
I’m sure there’s a deeper sociological explanation for why people are flying flags to support their preferred presidential candidate. But I find it bizarre and somewhat disturbing.
Flags are generally associated with nations, peoples, and armies. Unlike bumper stickers and yard signs, a flag says more about the person flying it than what it’s promoting. For instance, a political yard sign — like a sign promoting a business — promotes what it’s advertising. A flag, however, denotes territory, identity — and more specifically — the identity of the person flying it.
When someone displays a yard sign, they’re generally trying to raise awareness for their candidate and promote them. Signs are more effective the less-known the candidate. Many voters are lazy and wait until the last minute to research. Voters are therefore…
