You make good points, but modern audiences need to see things from the soldiers' perspectives. Like it or not, most veterans don’t come out like Tulsi Gabbard. They come out like that one-eye patch whats-his-name Congressman from Texas. Their stories deserve to be told in all their gruesome horror and beauty as well. Humans have been killing each other for thousands of years on battlefields, and they will continue to do so for thousands of years into the future. Films like 1917 spectacularly help us cope with the reality of war by allowing us to appreciate the brave foot soldiers who realized they would probably die in the trenches, anyway, so best to go out with their boots on.
